HHS Secretary Names New HHS Regional Representative for Chicago

HHS Secretary Michael Leavitt today announced the appointment of Douglas S. O'Brien as the Secretary's Regional Director for Region 5, based in Chicago. O'Brien will be the Secretary's direct representative responsible for guidance and coordination of HHS policies in the region, which includes Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin.

"Douglas' extensive experience will be valuable in building and enhancing our relationships in Region 5," Secretary Leavitt said. "His commitment to implementing the President's health and human services agenda and proven record of working with federal and state government agencies will make a significant impact in the Midwest."

Prior to joining HHS, O'Brien served as chief of staff for U.S. Congressman Mark Kirk, 10th District of Illinois. As chief of staff, O'Brien had oversight over the development of legislative agenda, local and national initiatives and communications strategies, with a particular emphasis on health care, national defense and transportation.

Previously, O'Brien served as the director of public affairs for IMC Global Inc., a global manufacturing company based in Lake Forest. In his role, O'Brien handled public affairs, media relations, local government outreach, crisis management and issue development for the Fortune 500 Corporation. Additionally, O'Brien has served as senior account supervisor for Hill and Knowlton, Inc., and Kemper Lesnik Communications and as coordinator of research and Development for the Illinois Gaming Board. O'Brien also has held positions with the Illinois Department of Central Management Services and on the staff of the Illinois House of Representatives.
