Statement by Tommy G. Thompson Secretary of Health and Human Services
Regarding HELP Committee Action on Head Start Reauthorization

While we appreciate the Senate's efforts to improve school readiness in the Head Start program, the Administration prefers the approach in the House bill. We remain committed to improving school readiness for all Head Start children, strengthening the collaboration between state early childhood programs and Head Start, and improving the management of the program. The House made great progress in its version of the bill, and we look forward to continuing to work with Congress to strengthen this vital program.
