STATEMENT BY TOMMY G. THOMPSON
Secretary of Health and Human Services
On House Passage of President Bush's Project BioShield

I commend the House of Representatives for their overwhelming passage of Project BioShield.

Project BioShield will assist our country's best scientists as they continue to work to improve our nation's defense against biological and chemical weapons. Project BioShield will enhance their efforts by making available modern, effective drugs and vaccines to protect against enemy attack with biological and chemical weapons or other dangerous pathogens.

We need to improve the medications and vaccines available to combat biological weapons. By bringing researchers, medical experts and the biomedical industry together, our nation can achieve the breakthroughs in bioweapons protection that we need to keep our families safe.

Again, I thank the Members of Congress who continue to work to protect all Americans from the bioweapons that our enemies might use against us.
