Federal Blood Donor Drive in Memory of
Oklahoma City Federal Employees

Today, HHS Secretary Donna E. Shalala expressed thanks to all government employees who donated blood at the time of the Oklahoma City tragedy. In addition, in her role as Chair of the Federal Donor Blood Campaign, Shalala kicked-off a nationwide summer campaign among federal workers as a memorial to their colleagues who were killed in the bombing.

In a letter to the heads of federal agencies, Secretary Shalala asked that all federal employees participate in the memorial campaign. The campaign is being launched during the summer when there are greater demands for blood and fewer donations. In fact, many communities face ongoing difficulties in maintaining enough blood to meet everyday emergency and surgical needs.

Secretary Shalala pointed out that a single donation can save two or three lives. She urged federal employees to "give the gift of life" in memory of those lost in April.
