ROCK ISLAND, Ill. -- Dec. 22, 2008 -- The Rock Island District is engaged in recovery operations following severe flooding over most of its area 78,000-square-mile area of operations. More than 200 counties in five states were heavily impacted by the flooding which caused levee overtoppings at more than a dozen sites. The District responded during the flood by deploying nearly 300 employees throughout the system to provide technical and flood fight command support, and provided nearly 13 million sandbags, 100 pumps, and more than 30 miles of plastic to assist local communities and levee districts in their flood fight effort.

Corps Awards $11.7 Million for Mississippi River Levee Repairs |

ROCK ISLAND, Illinois -- Oct. 8, 2008 -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Rock Island District has awarded a contract for $11,730,750.00 for repairs to two levee systems damaged during the 2008 flood.
L.W. Matteson, Inc., of Burlington, Iowa, will repair more than one mile of levee breaches at the Hunt and Lima Lake Drainage Districts and Indian Grave Drainage District, located along the Mississippi River in Illinois.

Lake Red Rock Receives $21 Million for Flood Recovery |

KNOXVILLE, Iowa -- Dec. 29, 2008 -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Lake Red Rock Project, received $21 million in federal flood recovery funding.
The Lake Red Rock Project is a vital part of area tourism, business economics and quality of life. The Corps is capturing impacts to the project and developing plans to recover from the floods of 2008. The $21 million will be invested into the Lake Red Rock project for flood recovery and will help strengthen the project for the future.

DAVENPORT, Iowa -- Nov. 17, 2008 -- Davenport Mayor Bill Gluba and the Assistant Secretary of the Army (Civil Works) Mr. John Paul Woodley, Jr., signed the Davenport flood risk management Project Partnering Agreement today at the Iowa American Water Company treatment facility in Davenport, Iowa. They were joined by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Brigadier General Michael Walsh, commander, Mississippi Valley Division and Colonel Robert Sinkler, commander, Rock Island District; Congressman Bruce Braley's District Director, Mr. Pete DeKock; and Mr. Brock Earnhardt, president of Iowa American Water. The signing ceremony was not open to the public.

Modular Buildings Ready for Cedar Rapids Community School District |

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Aug. 21, 2008 -- A ribbon cutting ceremony today officially confirmed that the Cedar Rapids Community School District is ready for the new school year despite serious damage to five district facilities caused by the June flooding. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Rock Island District, has completed the installation of 35 modular buildings which will serve as temporary facilities for the school district's central service offices.

Final Step Clears Way for Improvements to the Mississippi River System |

ROCK ISLAND, Illinois -- June 16, 2008 -- The final step to clear the way for ecosystem restoration and navigation improvements on upper portions of the Mississippi River System is complete.
On June 4, the Record of Decision was finalized for the Upper Mississippi River--Illinois Waterway System Navigation Feasibility Study. This completes the procedural requirements of the National Environmental Policy Act and allows the plan to move forward as authorized by Congress in the Water Resources Development Act of 2007. However, no construction will occur without appropriations from Congress.

Rock Island, Ill. -- The Flood of 2008 pushed District employees beyond the jobs many were used to doing on a day-to-day basis, which for some employees was a challenge they met head on. Matt Stewart, the acting chief of the Illinois Waterway Lock and Dam Section has enjoyed the job diversity the Corps has offered him so far in his career.
Stewart started working for the Corps in 1995 and has been looking to be involved in challenging positions and experiences ever since.
