STATEMENT BY HHS SECRETARY TOMMY G. THOMPSON
ON THE PASSAGE OF THE HOMELAND SECURITY BILL

I applaud Congressional passage of the bill creating the Department of Homeland Security, a vote that will ultimately help us improve the safety of American families in their homes and communities.

This legislation gives the President the necessary authority and flexibility to carry out his most important job as we face the new challenges of the 21st century: to protect and defend the health, safety and well-being of all Americans.

In the months since September 11, federal, state and local governments have worked as never before to protect American families through increased communication, cooperation and commitment to homeland security. The creation of the Department of Homeland Security will significantly enhance our ability to protect Americans from enemy attacks. We look forward to doing our part to work with and build the new department.
