Nutrient Standard Menu Planning

The United States Department of Agriculture collects nutrient data to be used for different databases- the Child Nutrition (CN) Database, and the USDA National Nutrient Database for Standard Reference (SR). Below is a comparison of the two databases:
Child Nutrition (CN) Database

How it is used? Required to be part of USDA approved software programs for schools using Nutrient Standard Menu Planning when implementing the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs as part of the School Meals Initiative for Healthy Children.

Who is Responsible? USDA's Food and Nutrition Service (FNS).

Types of data collected: Data from SR are used along with data submitted by industry. Data are also collected for the USDA Recipes for Schools and USDA commodities. Data meeting SR requirements are desired, but data that is rounded and adjusted in accordance with U.S. food labeling regulations is acceptable. Data are collected for 15 nutrients.

Is there a submission fee? No. School food manufacturers may submit nutrient data to Ace Info Solutions.

Where to obtain a copy: The CN Database is available free of charge here on the Healthy Meals Resource System Web site.

The CN Database is not searchable on-line and is used by software approved by USDA for implementing NSMP and SMI requirements
