Wildlife Habitats
Scholarships
An important part of our community involvement is working
with schools and school children. Our facilities are essentially
open-air classrooms as around 40,000 school children take tours each year.
Earth science, math, ecology and mining come alive for students whose schools
participate in our Adopt-A-School program. Students learn by taking
part in our Wildlife Habitat Program and we currently provide many scholarships
to qualifying students in higher education.
Adopt-A-School
Vulcan Materials Company believes businesses and schools should work
together. For school children from kindergarten through high school,
we provide assistance, expertise, materials and people power to schools
or individual classrooms in communities that are near our facilities.
Currently, Vulcan has over 250 adopted schools. It is our goal to
increase the number of our school partnerships every year. The relationships
we develop with schools are very important to us. Through our Adopt-A-School
program, we are committed to working with educators to help young
people learn about science, math and business.

Wildlife Habitats
Conducting a mining business means we own and lease large tracts of land.
For this reason, many of our environmental and charitable activities
center on preserving land and its wildlife inhabitants. Another way
we work with schools is by involving students in helping to develop
and maintain the wildlife habitats that are located at many of our facilities.
We began a partnership with the Wildlife Habitat Council in the late
1980s, and developed the first site in the country to be certified by
the Council as a sanctioned, enhanced habitat for indigenous wildlife
on corporate lands. Today, 37 of our quarry buffer areas are certified
wildlife habitats. These habitats must be recertified by the Council
from time to time and have to be continually maintained. Habitats or
shelters such as birdhouses have to be built, special areas must be
created and even crops planted to attract and feed the wildlife population.
Working together to build habitats to protect indigenous wildlife is
a way to involve your students in hands-on activities as they learn
about wildlife. We are always looking for ideas and projects that will
help us improve our wildlife habitats. If you have a particular project
in mind or an idea you would like to share with us, please contact us
at
learning@vmcmail.com.
