Configuring Java

Why does my system freeze when I access the Java Plug-in Icon within the Windows Control Panel?

This article applies to:
  • Platform(s):
    Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000 (SP4+), Windows XP (SP1 SP2)
  • JRE version(s):
    1.4.2_xx

You could be running advertisement blocking software or software that protects your PC from unauthorized access from the Internet. Running this software could prevent you from accessing the Java Plug-in icon within the control Panel.

To access the Java Plug-in Control Panel and configure the Java Runtime Environment (JRE):
  1. Shutdown and restart your PC.
  2. Do not connect to the Internet.
  3. Shutdown all applications including the advertisement blocking software, unauthorized access protection software, and all browsers.
  4. Double-click the Java Plug-in icon in the Windows control panel and configure as desired.
    For detailed instructions on enabling the JRE, see Enable Java software through the Control Panel.
  5. Save changes and close the Java Plug-in Control Panel.
  6. You can now run all your applications as usual.
