How will I benefit by upgrading to the Java Runtime Environment from Sun Microsystems?
This article applies to:
Browser(s): Internet Explorer 5.5, Internet Explorer 6.x, Internet Explorer 7.x
Sun Microsystems' Java Virtual Machine (JVM), which is part of the Java Runtime Environment (JRE), is a highly secure, open, robust, viable, and flexible platform. The Microsoft VM (MSVM) is based on an older version (1.1 released in 1997) of Java technology.
Millions of copies of the JRE have already been downloaded and used.
Millions of new computers are shipping with the JRE from Sun Microsystems.
In the near future, Microsoft will no longer support Java implementation.
Sun Microsystems has a strong commitment to Java inter-operability and compatibility. Sun has developed a site to help developers migrate from using the Microsoft VM to using Sun Microsystems' JVM.
