Why does Microsoft Internet Explorer crash after I visit a web page with Java applets?

This article applies to:
  • Platform(s):
    Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000 (SP4+), Windows XP (SP1 SP2), Windows 2003
  • JRE version(s):
    1.4.2_xx, 1.5.0, 6.0, 1.3.0_xx, 1.3.1_xx, 1.4.0_xx, 1.4.1_xx

SYMPTOMS

While using an Internet Explorer browser and visiting a Web page containing applets, the Internet Explorer browser crashes.

CAUSE

Here are some of the reasons that might cause Internet Explorer to crash.

  • Display settings are incorrect
  • The Java Runtime Environment (JRE) may not support the operating system and/or hardware configuration you are using
  • Required patches or hotfixes are not applied to your computer system
  • Browser version you are using may not be supported

SOLUTION

Following are the possible resolutions for this error. Choose the appropriate method(s) for your computer.

Make sure your operating system configuration supports the JRE version you are using.

Compare your operating system information to the following supported platforms for the latest Sun JRE. The latest version of the Sun JRE supports the following Microsoft Windows platforms:

  • Windows 98
  • Windows ME
  • Windows NT
  • Windows 2000
  • Windows XP
If you use Windows 95, you cannot use the latest Sun JRE. However, you can use an earlier version, with some limitations. The Windows 95 Help Page provides more information on topic.

Make sure you have the latest updates and hotfixes installed on your system

Check the Microsoft Windows update Web site, and check for the latest updates and hotfixes available for your computer. In most cases, applying the latest patches and hotfixes resolves the browser crash issue. You can check for the latest updates available for your computer two different ways:

  • Select the Update Windows menu from your system Start menu. Follow the instructions on this page to install available updates.
  • For more information, refer to the Microsoft Windows Update help page and follow the instructions on the installation page to obtain available updates.

Make sure your Web browser supports running the JRE

Check the Version and the Update Versions of your Web browser. Install the latest available service packs and updates for the Web browser.

The AOL Web browser

The AOL Web browser does not fully support viewing Java technology based applets or applications online. If you use America Online (AOL) for Web access, you will be able to run applets better in external Web browsers. Try using Mozilla, Netscape, Opera or Internet Explorer. To get the best results when using AOL:

  1. Connect to the Internet using AOL version 3.0 or higher
  2. Open a private chat within AOL, which allows your AOL client to remain open without asking if you wish to disconnect while AOL is minimized
  3. Minimize AOL
  4. Launch an external Web browser mentioned above
  5. For further information about AOL issues, please visit our AOL Issues page

Internet Explorer 5.5 or 6.x

If you are using Internet Explorer version 5.5, then make sure you have installed the Service Pack 2 (SP2) for your browser. If you are using Internet Explorer 6.x, make sure you have Service Pack 1 (SP1) installed for your browser.

Here is how to check the Version& and Update Version of your Web browser.

  • Start the Internet Explorer Web browser
  • Click Help --> About Internet Explorer menu. The About Internet Explorer screen is as shown in the screen shot below.

The About Internet Explorer screen
  • Check the Version information and Update Versions information displayed in "About Internet Explorer" screen.

Adjust the display settings

Another reason why a browser might crash is because of display settings. The JRE has a requirement of a minimum number of colors that your computer should support. Your minimum color settings should be 256 colors.
Following are the instructions to adjust the color settings of your computer.

  • Invoke the Control Panel by click the Start-->Settings-->Control Panel menu from the system Start menu. The Control Panel window appears as shown below.

The Control Panel window
  • Double click on the "Display" icon from "Control Panel" to navigate to the "Display Properties" screen. "Display Properties" screen appears as shown in the screen shot below.

Display Properties screen

Alternatively, the "Display Properties" window can be invoked by right-clicking the mouse on your "Desktop" and then selecting "Properties" menu from the pop up menu. In "Display Properties" window, click on the "Settings" tab. The "Settings" tab appears as shown in the screen shot below.

Click on Settings tab in the Display Properties screen
  • Set Colors to 256 or more colors supported by your system. The minimum color setting required is 256 colors. If the user has less colors selected (for example, 32 colors) then the JRE will crash which results in a crash of Internet Explorer.

Note:
With incorrect color settings, users will not be able to start the "Java Control Panel", and may still experience a Web browser crash when visiting a Web page running Java technology based applets.
