Error : “Top Moxie requires the Microsoft Virtual Machine”

This article applies to:
  • Browser(s):
    Internet Explorer 5.5, Internet Explorer 6.x, Netscape 6.2x, Netscape 7, Mozilla 1.4+

SYMPTOMS

  • During startup you get error “Top Moxie requires the Microsoft Virtual Machine”.
  • Are you seeing popup advertisements?
  • Strange software loads on startup or your favorites have new unwanted entries

CAUSE

TopMoxie is a memory-resident program that displays pop-up advertisements when you visit particular Web sites. Sun Microsystems does not bundle TopMoxie or it's partner module software of any kind with downloads of the Java Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (JRE) or the Java Software Development Kit (SDK).

SOLUTION

There are two solutions to resolve this issue.

Uninstall TopMoxie (Recommended for Consumers) Uninstall the TopMoxie by following these steps in order:
  1. Close all your browser sessions.
  2. Go To Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs
  3. Check if you find any of the TopMoxie partner module (such as Schoolcash, Technology4Kids or Coupons and Offers) followed by the TopMoxie entry in the list. Select the relevant entries and click on Remove.
    Note: You must first remove the partner’s module before TopMoxie or else the uninstall will leave an entry in your Add/Remove Programs.
  4. Delete the file folder c:/program files/topmoxie.

Deleting the value from the registry (Recommended only for advance users)

WARNING : It is strongly recommended that you back up the registry before making any changes to it. Incorrect changes to the registry can result in permanent data loss or corrupted files.

Note: This is done to make sure that all the keys are removed. They may not be there if the uninstaller removed them.
  1. Click Start > Run. The Run dialog box appears.
  2. Type regedit > Click OK. The Registry Editor opens.
  3. Navigate to the key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
  4. In the right pane, delete the value:
    "couponsandoffers" = "wjview /cp:p "C:\Program Files\couponsandoffers\System\Code" Main lp: "C:\Program Files\couponsandoffers"
    Note: Coupons and Offers is an example of Top Moxie module partners, You may see some other module partners too. Delete the values relevant to them too.
  5. Exit the Registry Editor.
  6. Restart your computer and you will not see the warning message again.
