Winter Scene — American River Ranger District
The Tahoe National Forest is located in the northern Sierra Nevada (east of Sacramento) and extends from the foothills across the Sierra crest to the California state line. (It does not include Lake Tahoe - visit the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit website for more information.) The Tahoe National Forest includes 800,000 acres of public land interspersed with 400,000 acres of private land in a checker board ownership pattern.
Rivers, rocks, snow capped peaks and scenic forests offer outstanding recreation year round. A complex set of ecosystems are found as the forest ascends from 1500 feet along the western boundary to over 9,000 feet along the crest. The forest provides a variety of resources and opportunities and is managed by the Forest Service. We hope your visit to this webpage provides helpful information and answers your questions.
OHV Grant Proposals — Public Comments Needed
The Tahoe National Forest is requesting comments on a proposed Cooperative Agreement application being submitted to the California Department of Parks and Recreation, Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation Division. The agreement application requests funding for Forest "Ground Operations" (includes Conservation, Trail Maintenance and Facilities Maintenance), "Planning," and "Law Enforcement" projects. There is a different process for filing comments on the application this year. Starting on Tuesday, March 3, 2009, the public may view this, and all grant applications, on the State's internet website: http://ohv.parks.ca.gov/. Previsions are made on that site to comment electronically which will go to both the State OHV Division and the Tahoe National Forest.

KVMR Members Donate $2,150 for Reforestation
of the American River Complex Fires
KVMR recently donated $2,150 to the Forest Service for reforestation of the American River Complex Fires which burned over 20,000 acres in June/July 2008 in the Tahoe National Forest. This generous donation was made to the Plant-A-Tree program for purchasing seedlings to be planted in the burned areas.
The donations collected by KVMR reflect 2 membership drives, one in October, 2008 and the second in February, 2009. "This shows us all how we can make a difference to both KVMR and our forests," stated Sandy Brown, Membership Coordinator.
The trees will be grown from seed adapted to areas near the burn and then planted in 2010. Out of the 20,000 acres that burned, trees will be planted on approximately 1,700 acres of the most severely burned areas. Funding from the membership drive will plant a portion of that.
