Western Larch on the Tally Lake Ranger District

Stretching along the west side of the continental divide from the US Canadian border south approximately 120 miles lies the 2.3 million acre Flathead National Forest. The landscape is built from block fault mountain ranges sculpted by glaciers, and covered with a rich thick forest. By providing abundant recreation and a wealth of natural resources, the Flathead is a perfect place to relax and enjoy your National Forests!

 

Current Events

Mid Swan Blowdown Project

The Swan Lake District of the Flathead National Forest has completed an environmental assessment for the Mid Swan Blowdown Salvage Project and is requesting public comment on the project. The project proposes to recover merchantable timber from areas affected by wind damage and provide wood products for local economies.The deadline for submitting written comment on the environmental assessment is March 18, 2009. more>


Flathead National Forest Resource Advisory Committee (RAC) Has Vacancies

The Flathead County Resource Advisory Committee (RAC) authorized by the United States Secretary of Agriculture has openings for one member and three alternate members. Applications must be submitted to the Flathead National Forest Supervisor’s Office by March 31, 2009. Applications are available from the Flathead National Forest Supervisor’s Office at 650 Wolfpack Way or by calling 758-5252. more>

Free Avalanche Clinics Offered

The Flathead National Forest in partnership with Glacier Country Avalanche Center is sponsoring several free avalanche awareness clinics in the Flathead Valley. The last free basic avalanche clinic will be held Wednesday, February 11, 6:30-8:00pm, in Kalispell at the Flathead National Forest Office, 650 Wolfpack Way. more>

Personal Use Firewood From National Forest Lands Requires Permit

Gathering and cutting firewood on the Flathead National Forest requires a personal woodcutting permit. A permit may be obtained at any Flathead National Forest office or from several vendors in the area. more>
