  • High prices for key staple foods eased-off in most parts of the region in late December 2008, breaking the trend of price increases which began in 2007. Nevertheless, prices are still well above the five-year average in most countries, particularly Somalia, Ethiopia, and Djibouti.
  • For Kenya the decline in prices between September and December 2008 of staple foods (particularly maize) is expected to be temporary as the country realized a significant production shortfall in the 2008 harvest. The 2009 harvests which start in June/July are also expected to be below average. Similarly, price reductions observed in Somalia could be reversed given the current highly uncertain political and security situations.
  • The upward movement in staple food prices in Tanzania is consistent with seasonal patterns although in most of the deficit production areas the prices are approaching the particularly high levels seen in March 2008 when the export ban was imposed.
