The Visitor Information and Associates' Reception
Center (VIARC) seeks to broaden the public's knowledge,
appreciation and enjoyment of the Smithsonian and to facilitate
and promote participation in its programs and activities. |
|
|
|
As the principal contact
point for information about the Institution, VIARC's work is
carried out through the Smithsonian
Information Center; 15 museum information/member reception desks; response services
for public and member mail, telephone and electronic inquiries;
outreach to the tourism industry; outdoor wayfinding stations;
and volunteer
programs, which provide primary support for the Institution's
public information activities and for staff project assistance
behind the scenes.

for visitors, located in the Great Hall of the Smithsonian Institution
Building.

Produces Web site content, online, hard copy, graphic, and
printed information sources that support VIARC programs and
inform internal and external Smithsonian audiences. The Division
also provides prepublication review of all Smithsonian and non
Smithsonian visitor information materials.

The Behind-the-Scenes Volunteer Program is the
Institution's central registration and placement service for
volunteers who wish to work on independent projects behind-the-scenes.

VIARC managed public service program through
which information desks in most of the Institution's Washington,
D.C., museums and the Smithsonian's central telephone information
