2008 North Central Regional Work Planning Conference
Manhattan, Kansas
June 23-26, 2008
The USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) with Kansas State
University (KSU) hosted the 2008 North Central Regional Work Planning Conference
from June 23-26, 2008, at the KSU Student Union in Manhattan, Kansas.
This conference is part of the National Cooperative Soil Survey (NCSS) in
working with the universities of the region and the USDA-NRCS. The conference
featured speakers from universities and agencies in Kansas that have worked with
the NRCS on special projects involving such topics as nitrate movement in the
soil near the Dodge City water well field.
There were multiple breakout sessions for Taxonomy, New Research, Research
Needs, and Interpretations committees. These sessions allowed all participants
to be involved in the committee of their choice.
A tour on Wednesday included a drive through the beautiful Konza Prairie in
the scenic Flint Hills of Kansas. The Konza Prairie is native grassland owned by
The Nature Conservancy. During this tour, the group also looked at soil pits on
a nearby ranch that are similar to the soils of the Konza Prairie.
