Briefly

Jean C. Buzby is a senior economist in the Diet, Safety, and Health Economics Branch.

Background

For over a decade, Dr. Buzby’s primary area of work at ERS has been food safety research. Within this area, her research has included estimating the benefits of reduced microbial food safety risks, analyzing the legal incentives for firms to produce safer food, and exploring international food safety issues. Her main area of responsibility is overseeing the per capita food consumption data system, its analysis, and its presentation on the ERS website. This data system contains data on the amounts of several hundred foods available for human consumption in the United States and the data extends back to 1909 for most commodities. It is one of the most popular data product on the ERS website and is useful for analyzing food consumption trends.

Education

She received her Ph.D. and M.S. in Agricultural Economics from the University of Kentucky. She received a B.S. from the Pennsylvania State University.
