VolunteeringDo you have some extra time on your hands and are you wondering how to spend it? Why don’t you consider becoming a volunteer and applying for one of the many full and part-time volunteer positions available in the El Yunque National Forest? Here are some of the interesting tasks that our volunteers perform: answering phone queries about the forest and its recreational opportunities, answering visitors’ questions about the forest at one of our three visitor centers, helping re-build and maintain a trail, painting bridges over rivers, helping with forest land surveys, helping to direct traffic on heavy visitation days, restoring an area damaged by a landslide, or training to become a volunteer trail guide assistant. Our volunteers also help repair and maintain picnic areas and keep recreational facilities and trails safe and barrier-free. There are even occasional opportunities to join-up with a forest research program to help conserve our valuable natural resources. The opportunities are virtually endless! Our volunteers are only prohibited from doing some law enforcement tasks. Most other tasks are open to you just for the asking. You can volunteer by yourself, with a friend or with your scout troop or other community organization. You can work part-time or full-time, on a one-time project, during one season, or all year. The breadth of the commitment you make to the El Yunque National Forest is entirely up to you. The Forest Service may provide on-the-job training if your volunteer assignment requires it. If you are a college student you volunteer work may even count toward credit hours in related college courses. ABOUT OUR VOLUNTEERSCLICK HERE to view the names (and photographs) of our many volunteers who have done extraordinary work in support of conservation projects in the El Yunque National Forest during 2006! Please join us in applauding them for dedicating their precious time and selfless efforts to help accomplish the Forest Service mission of “Caring for the land and serving people!”
