Expanded Food and Nutrition
Education Program (EFNEP)
The Expanded Food and Nutrition Education
Program (EFNEP) is designed to help low-income
audiences acquire the knowledge, skills,
attitudes, and changed behavior necessary
for nutritionally sound diets and to contribute
to their personal development and the improvement
of the total family diet and nutrition well-being.
It operates in nearly 800 counties throughout
the 50 states and in the territories of American
Samoa, Guam, Micronesia, Northern Marianas,
Puerto Rico, and Virgin Islands.
EFNEP targets
two primary audiences: low-income youth and
low-income families with young children.
In Fiscal Year 2002, EFNEP reached more than
400,000 youth.
Youth EFNEP provides education at schools
as an enrichment of the curriculum, in after-school
care programs, through day camps, residential
camps, community centers, neighborhood groups,
home gardening workshops, and 4-H EFNEP clubs.
In addition to lessons on nutrition, food
preparation, and food safety, youth topics
may include fitness, avoidance of substance
abuse, and other health-related topics.
