GIS/GPS Integration Teams

CSREES funding and leadership of the Geographic Information Systems/Global Positioning Systems (GIS/GPS) Integration Teams offers GIS- and GPS-savvy professionals the opportunity to teach local groups to use these tools.

The teams bring together youth tech teams and GIS-savvy mentors to help launch local “community mapping” projects that provide local decisionmakers with graphical maps to improve public understanding of community situations. These maps improve the quality of decisions affecting the local community's social, economic, or environmental conditions.

Mentors for this program come from USDA and other federal agencies, and from private and public organizations, such as ESRI (Environmental Systems Research Institute). This partnership has resulted in the establishment of intergenerational GIS design teams in 15 states.

Annually, design teams will select and recommend more than 30 youth and their adult advisors to represent the GIS/GPS Integration Teams at the annual ESRI conference in San Diego.
