GUIDE TO HISTORICAL RESEARCH

AT THE

NATIONAL AGRICULTURAL LIBRARY:

THE GENERAL COLLECTION

SUPPLEMENT, 1994 - Nov. 1999

Introduction

This supplement to the Guide to Historical Research at the National Agricultural Library: the General Collection includes relatively recent publications added to the Library's holding between 1994 and November 1999. Like the original, the supplement is designed as an entree to historical research at the National Agricultural Library, not as a comprehensive bibliography. Journal articles have been excluded; only a small percentage of the books of historical interest have been selected; and materials dealing with the agriculture of a single state have not been included. Although the Library's collection is worldwide in scope, containing material in some 75 languages, emphasis is on American agriculture and on English language publications.

NAL call numbers are given after each bibliographic citation. For information on obtaining materials from the Library, please refer to our Document Delivery Services, on the Web at: http://www.nal.usda.gov/ddsb/

Historical research at the National Agricultural Library continues to be centered in Special Collections. Rare books, manuscripts, photographs, posters, botanical art, nursery and seed trade catalogs, and the USDA History Collection are among the documents. Special Collections can now be accessed on the Library's Web site at: http://www.nal.usda.gov/speccoll/

AGRICOLA

The bibliographic database produced by the National Agricultural Library and cooperating institutions, AGRICOLA contains more than 3.3 million records on all aspects of agriculture and related subjects. It includes citations to journal articles, books, proceedings, dissertations, patents, translations, reports, and non-print materials. Although production in electronic format began in 1970, the database covers materials from the 16th century to the present.

Approximately 900 journals -- out of the over 20,00 serials received - are currently indexed in AGRICOLA. Because many of those dealing specifically with agricultural history are not indexed, the user may also want to check the current serials section of this guide and other bibliographic resources.

For materials published before 1966 and not found in AGRICOLA, the user should check the Dictionary Catalog of the National Agricultural Library, 1862-1965, and the Bibliography of Agriculture from1942 through 1969. Both are described in the 1994 Guide to Historical Research at the National Agricultural Library.

AGRICOLA is available for searching at the NAL and may also be accessed through our Web site at: http://www.nal.usda.gov/ag98

ISIS, the production arm of AGRICOLA, is updated daily and contains the most current bibliographic citations for books, journals, reports, audiovisuals, and other materials added to the NAL collections. It includes holdings records for individual journals generally beginning with 1973. ISIS may be accessed through the AGRICOLA Web site or by Telnet to: opac.nal.usda.gov.

Additional Databases

In additional to AGRICOLA, agricultural databases containing a significant number of historically related citations include: CAB Abstracts, AGRIS, TROPAG & RURAL, and Biological and Agricultural Index. ERIC, the database from the U.S. Dept. of Education, also contains citations on agricultural history. All these files are available for searching on the onsite NAL Network.

Important databases in the field of history not available at NAL include: America: History and Life; Historical Abstracts; DISCovering U.S. History; DISCovering World History, and Biography Master Index. For additional files, see the Gale Directory of Databases on the onsite NAL Network.

Selected Books

Because hundreds of books on the history of agriculture have been added to the National Agricultural Library's collection since 1994, it has been necessary to be highly selective in compiling this list. The emphasis is on books in the English language and on American agriculture.
