General Motors Plant in Tennessee Gets Rare Visitor
Spring Hill, Tennessee. A snowy owl has been spotted in Spring Hill, Tennessee, at General Motors' (GM) Spring Hill Manufacturing Plant. According to Shari Megrablian, Spring Hill's Site Environmental Manager, the first sighting of the snowy owl, nicknamed "Chevy," was in December. The Knoxville News Sentinel reports that there have only been two sightings of snowy owls in Tennessee since the 1960s. "The last one that I know about was seen in Dover around 1987, so it's super rare," said Megrablian.Beaver Spotted at DTE Property after 75 Year Absence from the Detroit River
Detroit, Michigan (February 2009) Wildlife officials are celebrating the sighting of a beaver in the Detroit River for the first time in decades, signaling that efforts to clean up the waterway are paying off. The Detroit Free Press reports that a beaver lodge has been discovered in an intake canal at Detroit Edison's Conners Creek power plant on Detroit's east riverfront. Detroit Edison is a subsidiary of DTE Energy, a longtime WHC member. WILDLIFE HABITAT COUNCIL RECEIVES $50,000 FROM MONSANTO FUND
SILVER SPRING, MD - The Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC) today announced it has received $50,000 from the Monsanto Fund, a private foundation and the philanthropic arm of Monsanto Company, to establish an on-line learning community to link hundreds of WHC Wildlife at Work teams as they establish wildlife habitat enhancement projects and site-based learning programs through the Council.
