Yes. Soil pH can be increased by manure or compost application because manures and composts contain lime-like materials such as calcium and magnesium, carbonates, and organic acids in the manure. Calcium carbonate is supplied in the feed rations of beef. Poultry litter can contain as much as 100 lbs. calcium per ton on a dry weight basis. The liming effect of organic wastes is due to the importation of base cations and of neutralizing agents (carbonates and organic acids).
