National Research Initiative
(NRI)
The National Research Initiative Competitive
Grants Program (NRI) is the office in the
Cooperative State Research, Education and
Extension Service (CSREES) of the USDA charged
with funding research on key problems of
national and regional importance in biological,
environmental, physical, and social sciences
relevant to agriculture, food, and the environment
on a peer-reviewed, competitive basis.
One topic area of the NRI is the biology
and management of pests and beneficial organisms.
The broad goal of this topic area is to support
fundamental and mission-linked research on
the biology of pest species, the agents that
suppress pests, and the interactions between
plants or livestock and their pests. Grants
are awarded within four program areas:
