  Today in history: March 4  
1881: On this day, California passed its first statute in the interest of horticulture, and a Horticultural Board was organized soon afterward.

1893: George Vasey, English-born botanist and specialist in grasses, died at his home in Washington, at age 71. The genus Vaseya is named for him, along with several other species of plants.

1927: The National Arboretum in Washington D.C. was established by an act of Congress.

1958: The Dwarf Fruit Tree Association was formed in Michigan.

2002: Utah declared the Spanish sweet onion its official state vegetable.
