Current Research

My current research focuses on survey methods for collecting information from private forestland owners, analyzing trends in private forest-land owners and the land that they own, and studying the factors that influence decisions made by private landowners. To this end, I am in charge of the National Woodland Owner Survey and involved in a number of related projects, such as the Sustaining Family Forests Initiative.

Why is This Important

There are over 11 million private forest owners in the United States who collectively own 421 million acres or 56 percent of the forest land in the United States. The fate of much of the nation's forests lies in the hands of this diverse and dynamic group of people and organizations.

Future Research

I will continue to conduct the National Woodland Owner Survey and related research that helps provide the information needed to maintain and increase our understanding of private forest owners. Future projects will likely focus on improving methods for communicating with private forest owners, assessing the impact of private forest owners' harvesting propensities for biofuels and related timber supply studies, and quantifying the differences between "new" and "old" forest owners.
