Description of the PMC Service
Area
The Aberdeen Plant Materials Center is in the middle of the Snake River plain in southern Idaho.
The topography is mountainous, with elevations ranging from 1,700 feet to 12,000
feet. The climate is continental, changes rapidly with altitude, and is
characterized as cold with wet winters and dry summers. Summers have cool nights
and warm days. Most precipitation
occurs as winter snow and spring rain. Total precipitation varies from less than
five inches to more than 25 inches annually. Extensive areas are severely eroded
by wind and water.
Land use is diversified, including vast acreage of native and reseeded
rangelands; extensive irrigated farmland under intensive cropping systems;
non-irrigated cropland in cereal production; large acreage of mountain
meadowlands and timberlands; and an increasing number of acres devoted to
urbanization, recreational farms and playgrounds, wildlife refuges, hunting
areas, and mining.
