What are the travel recommendations regarding the H5N1 bird flu outbreak in Asia and parts of Europe?

Dr. Tim Uyeki
Medical Epidemiologist, CDC

I wouldn’t cancel any travel. I wouldn’t worry about travel to any countries that have H5N1 in poultry or wild birds.  There are a few precautions that I would take.  For example, I do not recommend having any contact with poultry - sick, dead, or well appearing.  I would avoid visiting a chicken farm, for example, and if you come across a lot of dead wild birds on your travels, or sick, a lot of sick or dead chickens, I would definitely stay away.  Don’t touch them.  But as far as actually traveling to a country, right now, there’s absolutely no reason to cancel any travel, or be concerned.
