Extensive damage occurred to Miter Gate #2 (Upper Landwall) on 27
March 2004 at Lock 17, UMR Mile 437.1. The #2 Miter Gate was hit
again on 6 April 2005 and 28 March 2008. All towboats are advised
to have their tows completely flat on the upper guide wall before
the head of the tow reaches the upper miter gates. This should
help in eliminating or lessening any impact that might occur on
the #2 Miter gate. Any further contact to the #2 Miter Gate has
the potential to do extreme damage and close Lock 17.

General River Notes:

Rake to box couplings the entire width of the tow at break point
of the tow (ice couplings) will be required at locks when
conditions dictate. Double tripping and use of industry provided
helper boats during ice conditions will be required if proper
couplings are not accomplished prior to arrival at the lock.
Failure to comply may result in loss of turn.

T.J. O'Brien Lock is open to navigation.

Ice is covering 100% of river, up to six inches thick along the
shore. There are some nice open areas of water in the channel
with the remainder of the channels covered with broken, floating
ice.

Currently the sector gates are opening and closing completely,
however, if the gates should start lack opening completely, the
lock crew will contact the arriving vessels to notify them to stay
off of the approach and lock walls while entering and leaving the
lock to prevent any damage to the gates.

For more information, contact the Lock on land line 773-646-2183
or marine channel 16.
