The Star-Spangled Banner: The Making of an American Icon
By Lonn Taylor, Jeffrey Brodie & Kathleen M. Kendrick

When Francis Scott Key saw the U.S. flag still flying over Ft. McHenry in Baltimore, MD—signifying that the city had withstood the overnight British bombardment—he immediately sat down and wrote the words to "The Star-Spangled Banner." Since that September morning in 1814, the flag and the national anthem have occupied a special place in the hearts of Americans. And in the time of crisis American have often expressed their patriotism and defined their identity through the "broad stripes and bright stars." Eben Appleton, grandson of General Armistead who defended the flag and fended off the British in the battle of Ft. McHenry loaned the Star-Spangled Banner to the Smithsonian in 1907. Appleton converted the loan to a gift in 1912, just as the Smithsonian's own stature as a repository for America's historical as well as scientific artifacts and research was growing. In November 2008, the newly conserved flag will be the centerpiece of the historic renovation and reopening of the National Museum of American History. The dramatic story of this flag—and of the Smithsonian's effort to save it for posterity—are told here in this lavishly illustrated book. Featuring a diversity of flag-inspired imagery and motifs, the book explores the broader meaning of the American flag in American life.

Formerly a curator at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History, Lonn Taylor served as historian for the Star-Spangled Banner Preservation Project. Kathleen M. Kendrick and Jeffery L. Brodie are co-curators of a new exhibition about the reinstalled Star-Spangled Banner at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History.  2008; Hardcover; PP: 192; color and b&w photos throughout; 11" x 9"

The Star-Spangled Banner can be found in the National Museum of American History.
