Attention!
The Northern Research Station has realigned our staff from 37 Research Work Units and Programs into 14 new Research Work Units.
RWU-4104 is now part of NRS-6, Climate, Fire, and Carbon Cycle Sciences.
Some members of RWU-4104, including Linda Heath, James Smith, and Michael Nichols are now part of NRS-5, Forest Inventory & Analysis
Our Mission
To further understanding of the stocks and flows of carbon in forest ecosystems and their response to natural disturbances, environmental change, management practices, and land-use change, and to provide science-based information and tools for landowners to assess carbon stocks and enhance carbon sequestration through sound forest management.
Research
Our research focuses on
1. Providing information and models of plant and ecosystem carbon processes (photosynthesis, respiration, allocation, etc.) on a scientific basis for sound carbon management decisions and policies.
2. Developing comprehensive historic, current, and projected estimates, including estimates of uncertainty, of national-level forest and forest-related carbon stocks and stock changes under a variety of management, disturbance, land use change, and environmental scenarios.
3. Developing methods for estimating, monitoring, and forecasting changes and trends in forest and forest-related carbon stocks and to provide related tools and information for sustainable management of forests.
More Information
This site is under development as the Forest Service brings together the Northeastern and North Central Research Stations to form the Northern Research Station, serving the Northeast and Midwest. Check back often as we expand our site to reflect our combined commitment to supporting the natural resources and people of the Northeastern and Midwestern United States.
