Exploring the History of Chocolate

WHAT:The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History and Mars Inc. partner to present “Chocolate: The North American Experience,” a day of public demonstrations and an academic symposium exploring the history of chocolate.

Demonstrations: Food historians from the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation and the Fortress of Louisbourg, National Historic site of Canada; industrial chocolate makers from Mars Inc.; and Chef Barnes from the National Museum of the American Indian will lead several different demonstrations of historical chocolate making. Demonstrations are free and open to the public.

Symposium: The academic symposium will address the cultural and historical aspects of chocolate, from the dispersion of chocolate consumption to the business of production to its social role in American society. Attendance is free and open to the public, but advance registration is required.
