Land Lake College
Lake Land College in Mattoon, IL received a CSREES Secondary
and Two-Year Postsecondary Agriculture Education Challenge
Grant in 2005 (agreement
number: 2005-38414-15705) to provide high school teachers
and students with curriculum materials and training in Global
Positioning Systems (GPS) technology.
Knowledge of GPS technology is essential to many agricultural
sciences graduates to more effectively and efficiently manage
critical resources. This project funds developing an active
learning curriculum module focused on sustainable and precision
agriculture and GPS. The module and accompanying GPS handheld
equipment will be available for nearby high schools via a
Mobile Precision Agriculture Education (MPAE) laboratory. The
college will hire a MPAE coordinator to train the trainer
to improve teacher knowledge of GPS technology throughout
the region. In addition, this project will:
- provide training in GPS technology and precision agriculture
to 1,500 high school students in the Lake Land College
district;
- introduce 20 to 25 high school teachers in the Lake Land
College district to the importance of GPS technology and
the accompanying curriculum module, and;
- disseminate information about this project to other high
schools and community colleges throughout the state.
