The Seed Biotechnology
Center at the University of California Davis
recognizes University
Research Partner
Dr. Kent Bradford
Dr.
Bradford is the Academic Director of the
Seed Biotechnology Center at UC Davis
and the vice-chair for teaching and
curriculum development for the
Department of Plant Sciences.
His research focuses on all aspects of
seed biology, from the molecular biology
and physiology of seed development,
dormancy and germination to the storage,
enhancement and utilization of seeds for
agricultural purposes. Dr. Bradford has
been involved in numerous collaborative
projects including:
-
The
Compositae Genome Project
-
Molecular genotyping of a lettuce
mapping population with Progeny
Advanced Genetics and the USDA-ARS
-
Aspects of seed physiology and seed
quality with the Seed Physiology
Research Group, a consortium of seed
companies
-
Single-seed respiration analysis
funded by the American Seed Trade
Association
As the
economics and biology of many
biotechnologies converge in the
agricultural delivery system of the
seed, his contributions have
significantly increased the
understanding of seed biology for
important crops such as tomatoes,
melons, lettuce, peas, beans, rice,
broccoli, peppers, and carrots.
