James E. “Bud” Smith City Plant Materials Center

Established 1965
Since 1965, the Knox City Plant Materials Center in Knox City, Texas has provided plant solutions
for central Texas and southern Oklahoma. The Center has released over 30
improved conservation plants including varieties of sideoats grama, Engelmann
daisy, Texas swampmallow, bur oak, spike dropseed, Texas dropseed and eastern
gamagrass. The Center develops technology for controlling wind and water
erosion, restoring saline areas, improving wildlife habitat, stabilization of
critically eroding areas, and improving range and pasture land.
Special Features
Effective October 12, 2008 Gary Rea will join the Texas NRCS Ecological
Sciences Staff as the new Manager of the James E. “Bud” Smith Plant Materials
Center in Knox City, TX. Gary has a PhD in Crop Science from Oklahoma State
University and has worked in the private industry as a Plant Breeder and
Director of Research. As a State of Texas Registered Plant Breeder, Gary brings
a wealth of knowledge to our Agency and the Plant Materials program.
