Welcome to the SEMPA Web Site

The Society of Emergency Medicine Physician Assistants (SEMPA) was founded in 1990 and represents emergency medicine PAs (EMPAs) in the United States and around the world. SEMPA is the premier organization that:

  • Works closely with the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) and the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) regarding issues pertaining to EMPAs and is formally recognized by both.
  • Provides the EMPA with information on scope of practice, legislative and reimbursement issues, professional advocacy, continuing medical education (CME) opportunities, and the appropriate utilization of PAs in the emergency department.
  • Recognizes that EMPAs are vital to the solution of workforce shortages within the medical community.
  • Advances the role of PAs in reducing patient waiting times, thereby enhancing the patient’s experience in the emergency department.
  • Works collaboratively with supervising physicians and other professional colleagues to provide emergency medical care in a variety of practice settings.
  • Educates the public on the EMPA profession and serves as a professional resource for all practicing emergency medicine PAs.
To support SEMPA in these endeavors, we encourage you to become a member today and begin taking advantage of the exclusive benefits we offer. Membership is open to students, practicing PAs, and our professional colleagues. Emergency Medicine PAs represent a significant percentage of the total practicing PA profession and SEMPA is the collective voice within the emergency medicine PA community.
