Answer to the Front Page Picture of the Week Question
for Sept 12th - Sept 20th, 2005

Picture of Colocasia esculenta 'Black Magic'. Click here for a larger image.
This is Colocasia esculenta 'Black Magic', or 'Black Magic' elephant’s-ear.

Colocasia esculenta 'Black Magic' prefers full sun to partial shade, but full sun brings out the best leaf color. Many use this plant in an aquatic garden, however, if planted in soil, never allow the soil to dry out between waterings. Colocasia esculenta 'Black Magic' can grow up to 6 feet tall, and it is hardy in
USDA Hardiness Zones 8-11. In Hawaii it is grown commercially for the Hawaiian food staple, poi.
You can view this plant in the U.S. National Arboretum Aquatic Garden.
