Answer to the Front Page Picture of the Week Question
for April 27th - May 13th, 2005

Picture of Arisaema ringens, Japanese cobra lily. Click here for a larger image.
This is Arisaema ringens Japanese cobra lily.

Arisaema ringens prefers a cool, moist, shady spot, but will tolerate a sunny position if the soil is kept
moist enough. Despite its tropical appearance Japanese cobra lily is hardy in USDA Hardiness Zones 5-9.
The unique structure featured here is the spathe, a modified leaf structure that encloses flower parts.
Overall vigor determines the sex of the flower- the healthier the plant the better a chance of a
female flower. Once the female flower bears young it will revert back to a male. You can
view this Arisaema ringens at the National Bonsai and Penjing Museum.
