Answer to the Front Page Picture of the Week Question
for November 16th - November 22nd, 2004

Picture of Salvia mexicana 'Limelight'. Click here for a larger image.
This is 'Limelight' Mexican sage, Salvia mexicana 'Limelight'.

It is a selection that features gray green leaves with lighter veins; the calyces are
chartreuse and highlight the dark royal blue flowers. Given full sun and warm temperatures,
Mexican sage is one of the fastest growing of the salvias. It reaches four feet in height
and is one of the last of the salvias to bloom in the autumn when many other salvias
are beginning to look a bit worn. It is hardy in USDA hardiness zones 8 through 10 but
it is often grown as an annual in colder climates where early frost is not a factor. You can
see 'Limelight' Mexican sage in the National Herb Garden.
