Answer to the Front Page Picture of the Week Question
for September 14 - 24, 2004

This is love-in-a-mist, Nigella damascena.

The attractive flowers are replaced by ornamental balloon-like seed capsules at this time of the year.
Nigella seeds are used in flavoring food in some cultures. Love-in-a-mist, which is also sometimes
called 'devil-in-the-bush' - is a cool season annual that sows itself readily in the garden if the
seed capsules are allowed to mature. You can also dry the seed capsules for use in dried
flower arrangements. You can find love-in-a-mist in the National Herb Garden.
