This tree is closely related to the more common goldenraintree, Koelreuteria paniculata. Chinese flame tree blooms much later than goldenraintree and the pods of goldenraintree are dull brown or tan in color. Chinese flame tree, a perennial dicot member of the Sapindaceae family, is marginally hardy in the Washington, DC area. There is concern about the invasive potential for this plant, particularly in locations to the south of Washington, since it produces large quantities of seedlings. You can see it in the National Herb Garden. |
