This is one of the dominant tree species on the grounds of the Arboretum and can grow to a very large size and live for hundreds of years. The small fruits produce two nutlets that are relished by squirrels and other wildlife. You can see fine examples of American beech in the Fern Valley Native Plant Collections, and near the Administration Building. [Click on the picture to see a larger image]. |
