POSITION:  Senior Scientist, Plant Biology

Job Description

Throughout the 20th century, BASF has played a leading role in agriculture and nutrition. BASF Plant Science (BPS) was founded in 1998 and is represented at seven sites in four countries. With this international network of expertise, BPS is especially well equipped to be a leader in plant biotechnology, creating and commercializing innovative products to help keep the world's growing population well fed in the 21st century.

The Scientist will be a member of the Knowledge Management team within the BASF Plant Science organization. This team performs critical activities necessary to advance BPS's plant breeding and biotechnology projects from idea to marketplace as fast and effectively as possible. The Scientist will be responsible for devising novel approaches for the discovery of genes that improve seed yield and nutritional quality of row crops.

The individual will contribute in the development and implementation of new research strategies, screening methods, and in the analysis and mining of various molecular, biochemicals, genetic and phenotypic data types from various discovery platforms. The candidate will work as part of multi-functional teams in a global matrix structure. The scientist is expected to prepare reports that summarize the analyses of research data, interpret the findings and provide conclusions and recommendations to trait projects. Contribution to the creation of intellectual property for the protection of products and methods is also expected.

Qualifications

Required

  • Thorough knowledge and at least 3 years experience in plant development, metabolism, and plant architecture.

  • Experience studying gene-function relationships using molecular biology and biochemistry approaches applied to the understanding of the plant development, yield and nutritional quality of crops. 

  • Familiarity with experimental design and statistical analysis methods

  • Good communication skills

  • Excellent problem solving skills, with demonstrated ability developing and implementing creative solutions to complex problems. 

  • A Ph.D. with a minimum of 2 years experience conducting independent research in plant biology, or equivalent combination of education and experience in molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics or related field. BASF recognizes Institutions of Higher Education which are accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or equivalent.

Preferred

  • Experience in genetics and/or systems biology is also a plus.
