Celebrating 20 Years in Conservation

When the Wildlife Habitat Council was formed in 1988, the founders conceived a new and innovative concept of bringing together - conservation and business. This was the first cooperative effort between the environmental community and industry. A visionary team of companies -- Anheuser-Busch Companies, Inc., DuPont Company, ExxonMobil, General Electric Company, Tenneco Oil Company and United States Steel Corporation and environmental groups -- the American Farmland Trust, Izaak Walton League of America, National Wildlife Federation and World Wildlife Fund -- came together to search for innovative joint ventures in environmental stewardship. Today, with our members and partners, we continue to share a vision to conserve and restore natural ecosystems for the benefit of humanity and the earth's biological diversity.

The Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC) is a nonprofit, nonlobbying 501(c)(3) group of corporations, conservation organizations, and individuals dedicated to restoring and enhancing wildlife habitat. Created in 1988, WHC helps large landowners, particularly corporations, manage their unused lands in an ecologically sensitive manner for the benefit of wildlife. More than 2 million acres in 48 states, Puerto Rico, and 16 other countries are managed for wildlife through WHC-assisted projects.

Habitat projects on these lands, which vary in nature and scope, are corporate-driven cooperative efforts between management, employees, community members, local conservation groups and local, state and federal agencies. By creating volunteer-based wildlife teams of company employees and community groups like Boy Scouts, Girls Scouts and local schools, WHC wildlife programs achieve a high level of success. WHC also works to broaden understanding of wildlife values through the incorporation of environmental education, volunteer participation and community outreach programs.

Since 1990, WHC has certified hundreds of programs at corporate facilities around the world providing third-party credibility and an objective evaluation of projects through our Corporate Wildlife Habitat Certification/International Accreditation Program. Certification validates wildlife habitat projects to employees as well as the community at large, transferring sustainability into people's everyday lives. Contemporary scientific and academic thought attributes increased significance to the role of privately owned lands in establishing and maintaining habitats to conserve species diversity in places where people live, work or play.

Among many honors, WHC has received Presidential recognition for its unique role in building partnerships and won the Chevron-Times Mirror Magazines Conservation Award. WHC was also honored by Virginia Environmental Stewardship Awards in the nonprofit category for undertaking initiatives to restore and enhance natural resources.
