The WIC Formula Database provides general information
about WIC-eligible infant formulas, exempt infant formulas,
and WIC-eligible medical foods that have been determined by
FNS to meet Federal WIC requirements. This database does NOT
identify State WIC food lists. State agencies do not have
to authorize all foods that meet WIC-eligibility requirements.
Links to the manufacturer are provided so that the most current
nutrient content, package size, and other detailed product
information can be found easily. This database is intended
to be a resource for Regional offices and WIC staff at State
and local agencies.
What is the difference between a "WIC eligible
food" and a "WIC authorized supplemental food"?
The term "WIC
eligible food" refers to a food or food product,
such as infant formula, exempt infant formula, or medical
food, which meets the minimum Federal
WIC regulatory requirements. These Federal regulatory
requirements specify the food categories, maximum monthly
allowances, and the nutritional requirements for all WIC-eligible
foods. It is not required that FNS verify the WIC-eligibility
status of foods and food products, however it is the responsibility
of WIC State agencies to ensure regulatory requirements are
met when authorizing supplemental foods for the WIC Program
in the State.
Authorized supplemental foods are WIC-eligible
foods that are approved for issuance by the State Agency that
administers the WIC Program in each State. State agencies
do not have to authorize all foods that meet WIC-eligibility
requirements. State agency decisions may be influenced by
the following factors: cost, product distribution within a
State, participant acceptance, and administrative feasibility.
