Who We Are:

Indiana’s Food for the Hungry, formally known as “Safe Food for the Hungry” originated from a video teleconference workshop designed to teach the basics of food safety and nutrition. From that, the program has evolved to include a website that has a food assistance directory, newsletter and resources available to emergency food programs and the public. The program also helps to promote “client choice” in emergency food assistance programs throughout the state of Indiana.

Indiana’s Food for the Hungry brings together individuals with a variety of backgrounds in the effort to promote food security and food safety. The diversity of the program allows staff to work with individuals to provide nutrition and food safety information and promote awareness of the issue of hunger in the state of Indiana.

What We Do:

Indiana’s Food for the Hungry addresses the educational needs of those who work to provide emergency food assistance throughout the state of Indiana. This includes: directors, full and part-time workers, volunteers, and other interested individuals or groups. Health officials, Cooperative Extension Educators, and other people who work with food assistance organizations or limited resource audiences may also find the program useful. The members of this audience vary tremendously in age, education, background, and knowledge of the subject.

The education provided includes nutrition and food safety information associated with emergency food feeding programs. Methods of delivery include a newsletter that addresses various topics related to nutrition and food safety. Copies of the newsletter and educational insert are available for download from the website and can be distributed to clients or staff.

Indiana’s Food for the Hungry staff also maintains the database of emergency food assistance programs in the state. Any changes in location or hours of operation can be e-mailed to safefood@purdue.edu or mailed to: Dr. Amy Mobley, Department of Foods and Nutrition, Stone Hall, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN 47907-1264.
