Brownfields/Remediation

WHC helps corporations optimize Brownfield redevelopment and Superfund/RCRA remediaton through the use of natural resource-based approaches and ecological enhancements. Remediation projects, which include wildlife conservation and enhancement, are achieving substantial cost savings as well as improving the social, economic and environmental value of sites. Encouraging sustainable development through ecological approaches also creates valuable benefits for communities, such as green space and opportunities to learn about the environment. WHC works with companies to re-use these sites instead of expanding elsewhere and developing new sites. Sites have seen new vitality and utility, adding new jobs and investing millions of dollars in capital growth.

WHC has hosted a series of conferences on Brownfields, Superfund and RCRA projects through the support of a diverse senior-level advisory committee from corporations, NGOs and state and federal regulatory agencies. These conferences are designed to help participants strategize the necessary problem solving steps in making ecological enhancements a reality. Building upon the continued success of these conferences, WHC will turn its focus on the implementation of ecological enhancements at the regional level. Read summaries from previous conferences

Through a cooperative agreement with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response (OSWER), WHC has developed the Land Restoration program, which presents success stories/case studies of contaminated properties where ecological enhancements have been successfully used as remediation techniques, integral components of the remediation design and/or end uses, hence providing wildlife habitat. WHC will work with its members and other stakeholders to post information about case studies and success stories. We encourage our members to submit their case studies and success stories.

Since 1997, WHC in partnership with Bridgestone Americas Holdings, Inc. has looked at ways to develop New Beginnings - The Woodlawn Wildlife Area in Cecil County, Maryland, as a naturally sustainable wildlife conservation area. WHC has networked extensively in the county, working with interested individuals, youth groups, schools, extension services, and local conservation groups. These groups have worked together toward a common vision for both the landfill and adjacent areas – an area of high wildlife value and environmental education opportunities.
