BONNIE J. CAMPBELL NAMED TO U.S. DELEGATION OF
U.N. FOURTH WORLD CONFERENCE ON WOMEN

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Bonnie J. Campbell, Director of the
Justice Department's Violence Against Women Office, leaves the
United States today to be a delegate to the United Nation's Fourth
World Conference on Women in Beijing, China. She joins a
delegation chaired by Ambassador Madeleine K. Albright, U.S.
Permanent Representative to the United Nations. Other delegation
members include Health and Human Services Secretary Donna Shalala,
Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Carol Browner, Under
Secretary of State for Global Affairs Timothy E. Wirth, and Drew
University President Tom Kean.

Ms. Campbell, the former Attorney General of Iowa, serves as
the Justice Department's primary official dealing with family
violence and sexual assault, issues that will be addressed at the
World Conference. "Women and families all over the world have an
interest in ending violence," Campbell says. "The U.S. has an
opportunity to take the lead. This conference can influence the
direction of public policy on these issues at the national and
international levels into the next century."

The World Conference is being held in Beijing, China, from
September 4 through September 15, 1995. In 1992, the Bush
Administration joined with other countries to accept China's
invitation to host the Conference.
