Who will be planting the trees?
USA TODAY has partnered with the Arbor Day Foundation, a national organization that inspires people to plant, nurture, and celebrate trees. Visit www.arborday.org to find out how you can receive 10 free trees for yourself.
Where will the trees be planted?
Based on the season and needs, we will be planting trees in forests throughout the USA. Our first forest will be Tiger Bay State Forest in Daytona, Florida which recently suffered a fire due to extremely dry weather conditions. The planted Slash Pine and Cypress trees will provide habitat for the Florida black bear and help re-establish the ecosystem.
What can one tree do?
According to the Arbor Day Foundation, planting one tree eliminates 86 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions in 10 years. Over the course of 50 years, one tree can generate $31,250 worth of oxygen, $62,000 worth of air pollution control, recycle $37,500 worth of water and control $31,500 worth of soil erosion.
By switching to electronic bills, statements and payments, every year the average household will*:
- Save 6.6 pounds of paper
- Avoid producing 171 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions
- Preserve 24 square feet of forestland
- Avoid releasing 63 gallons of wastewater into the environment
- Avoid using 4.5 gallons of gas to mail bills, statements and payments
